Truth About Life After College...

So you just graduated college and are ready to get your career started and really live large right... You will soon realize how hard the real world really is, and how easy you really had it in college...

Moving Back Home...
Moving back home after spending years living on your own sucks, lol... You are use to being independent, and doing whatever you want whenever you want... so your not going to want to live under you parents rules anymore... So you think... Im just gonna move out... Sounds good, until you actually think of how much money living on your own really costs... There's no commons meal plan in the real world... You want internet, cable, heat? Well more times than not it doesnt come with the apartment. It will cost you extra. If you don't pay your rent they arent going to put a hold on your account, they are going to kick you out and maybe take you to court... Unless you are one of the lucky one who finds a really high paying job right after college you may want to follow Mom & Dads rules alittle bit longer...

Job Situation...
You will start applying to jobs and like many people you will get occasional calls back but it wont be the job you want, and before you know it months have passed and you still havent found your dream job yet... Dont get too upset...This is all normal, especially with this economy...

Unless your going into the Medical or Law field, work in the classroom doesn't give you real world experience, and many jobs will pick someone with experience but no degree, over someone with a degree and no experience... I've literally been told before "You seem like a good student, but you just don't have enough experience, but thanks for stopping by"...

Just realize that you have 6 months until Student Loans comes knocking on your door, so at some point any money is better than no money... so dont be ashamed to take a job your over qualified for, just dont settle for it. Work there while still looking. This is a good opportunity to do an unpaid internship what will give you the experience you need, and will build up your resume.
Student Loans...
You cant escape student loans... and running from it will only make it harder for you to pay them back. Believe it or not they are actually here to help you pay it back, but you have to communicate it with them. If you simply call them and tell them that you are unemployed, are trying to save up for a car, or simply dont make enough money, 9 times out of 10 they will completely understand and will work with you to make it affordable for you, without damaging your credit. Worse comes to worse dont let it stress you out. There is no debtors prison, and bad credit can be improved over time.

Grad School...
You may decide that going back to school is what you wanna do. Grad School is a great way to advance your career, but is much different than undergraduate. You cannot go to grad school undeclared. You must go for exactly what you want to do. Grad School is also not a way to escape the current recession or student loans. Grad School is very expensive, and those loans combined with your undergraduate loans can put you in serious debt if you dont make the most of this opportunity. A masters degree with no job experience is like taking a million online driving classes, but never actually physically getting behind a wheel of a car... U really expect someone to trust you with their car?

Just know that while College was alot of fun, Life After college is alot more fun and is filled with countless opportunities. But to succeed it takes, Hard work, determinition, and that never give up attitude. Anything is possible, and no dream is unachievable if you work hard for it.

It also helps to know people... Its not what you know, Its who you know....

  1. I've been waiting for you to post this!! LOL... but yes, you are completely right...

Another big thing about loans is: CONSOLIDATE if you can, and whatever the minimum payment is, if you can pay a few dollars more it will pay off in the long run... Many times your payment goes towards your INTEREST first and then PRINCIPLE!!! So the extra money you pay over the minimum payment will help your PRINCIPLE lower quicker (which is what you want!!!)
So say after you consolidate your minimum payment is $75, if you can make a $100 or even $125 payment, trust me it will pay off in the long term... Your 25 year payment plan might be shaved down to say 20 years.. Also quite a few plans have "specials" where if you consistently pay on time each month, say for 3 years, you then get a %-age interest rate reduction... So your interest rate could go from 3.3% to 3% for good behavior, which pays off in the long run as well...

And you couldn't be more true with the last statement.. Although I will amend it to say: "It's 25% what you know, and 75% who you know!!" Because if you don't have drive and a good work ethic, it doesn't matter who you know, you may get the job, but will never actually make an IMPRESSION!!!
