Kobe vs Jordan - The Debate to end all Debates

Im not going to argue that  Kobe  is better than  Jordan , Im simply here to state that its much closer than people assume, and that Jordans legacy is inflated by the media...

At first glance stats wise it may seem like Jordan blows Kobe out of the water...
Jordan  - 30.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 2.3 steals, 0.8 blocks per game, shot 49.7% from the field, 32.7 %  from the three-point line, and 83.5 % from the free throw line.

Kobe  25.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.5 steals, 0.6 blocks per game, shot 45.5% from the field, 34.0 %  from the three-point line, and 83.8 % from the free throw line.

How ever you must take into account that Kobe Bryant kame straight out of High School and didnt get much play time his first few seasons. If you take away his first 3 seasons (Jordan played 3 years in College) then Kobe is almost on par with Jordan"s stats. Kobe averaged almost 29 points per game if you take away the first 3 seasons, and its also noteworthy that Jordan averaged about 2.1 more shot attempts than Kobe did.

On average, when Jordan shot 20 times, he scored 26.3 points, while Kobe averages 26.2 points per every 20-shot attempts. (Via Bleacherrepost.com)

The worse reason I ever heard was that Kobe is selfish and Jordan is a better teammate. Bull Shit. Jordan was a horrible teammate. He punched Steve Ker and Steve Perdue during a practice, ran his old coach out of Chicago because he didnt run the offense Jordan wanted to play in, and lets not forget how he treated a young Kwame Brown. He kalled him a "Flaming Faggot" and told him "When im on the court dont you touch the ball BOY". While that is funny to me (lmaoooo) thats not what "Legends" are made of.

People say Kobe is an asshole, cheated on his wife, and ran Shaq out of LA...

Jordan also cheated on his wife (Thats why she divorced him), had a Gambling problem (Similiar to the thing Pete Rose got banned from Baseball for), Just up and left his teammates to go play Baseball, and lets not forget his Asshole of the Year candidate Hall of fame speech (Click here to Watch his full Speech) in which he made fun of his old High school and College teammates who played over him, and ridiculed his coach.

They also say Jordan made his team better.
Jordan had a squad. Scotty Pippen is one of the 50 greatest NBA players ever, Rodman was a great defender, Ker was a clutch 3 point shooter. Point is it wasnt just Jordan, he had a great team (Similiar to what Kobe has now ). More proof is this...

  • When Bill Russell retired in 1969, the Celtics went from 48-34 (championship) to a 34-48 record and missing the playoffs.
  • When Wilt retired in 1973, the Lakers went from 60-22 to 47-35 and a first-round exit.
  • When Larry Bird missed 76 games in the 1988-1989 season, the Celtics went from 57-25 to 42-40 and getting swept in the first round of the playoffs.
  • When Oscar retired from the Bucks in 1974, the team went from 59 wins (Finals appearance) to 38 wins and missing the playoffs.
  • When Magic retired from the Lakers, the team went from 58 wins to 43 wins and losing in the first round of the playoffs.
Thats an average of 15.5 less wins

Now, you would expect the same thing to occur with Jordan suddenly retiring before the 1993-1994 season and the Bulls replacing him with Pete Myers, a player from the CBA.
However, the team went from 57 wins the year before to 55 without Jordan and 51-21 in the games Pippen played in, which is a 70.83 winning percentage, while the season before with Jordan, the team had a 69.5 winning percentage, lower with Jordan than without him. They lost in the 2nd round in 7 games to the Knicks to a very controversial call (Here it is if you never seen it), if they had won that game they would have been the favorites to win another NBA championship (They swept the eastern confrence champion Pistons 6-0 that year in the regular season).

Plus to be realistic all of Jordans Teammates played better without him. Pippin was a MVP candidate and became only the second player ever to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks per game. Several other teammates made their only Allstar apperances without Jordan.

(If you take Kobe off the Lakers I highly doubt Gasol wud be a MVP candidate #JustSayin  lol)

Jordan Never won without Pippen, Kobe has won without Shaq #JustSayin  lol

Plus Kobe def plays in a much tougher NBA than Jordan did, I dont even see how anyone can even argue this. In Jordan days the league was watered down by expansion teams (Miami, Minnesota, Charlotte, and Orlando were all created in 1989-1990.)

The best team other than the bulls in that era was the Rockets and Knicks.

Kobe has had to face the  Tim Duncan Spurs (3 championships) Steve Nash (2 time MVP)  Pheonix Suns Lebron James (2 time MVP) Cleveland Cavs ,  Boston Celtics (2008 NBA  Champions). Also Jordan didnt face any defensive teams close to being as strong as the  2004  Pistons

In closing Jordan will always be the greatest in Space Jam, Sneakers, and Hanes Commercials, but in reality if he played in todays NBA in his prime would be equal with Kobe and Lebron.
